To understand why the patch was necessary, one must first understand the host. PES 2013, released in late 2012, is often referred to by purists as the "Last Great Traditional PES." Unlike its successors, which stumbled with broken defensive AI and unresponsive dribbling, PES 2013 hit a sweet spot. It had the weight of the PS2 era but the graphical fidelity of the HD generation. The "Full Control" dribbling and manual passing gave players a sense of agency that felt absent in the more automated FIFA series.
