Windows NT 3.1 was a ground-up rewrite. Designed primarily by Dave Cutler (who previously worked on VMS at DEC), it was a 32-bit, preemptive multitasking operating system independent of DOS. It brought the visual interface of Windows 3.1 to a rock-solid, enterprise-grade engine.
