The album's core sound was heavily influenced by Stone's time working with Damian Marley in the supergroup SuperHeavy (which also included Mick Jagger and Dave Stewart). Marley co-produced the record and encouraged Stone to dive deeper into reggae.
Unlike her previous soul-drenched records, Water for Your Soul is steeped in the rhythms of the Caribbean. You can hear the influence of the "Gongzilla" in the heavy basslines and the laid-back, rhythmic cadence of Stone’s vocals.
