The film’s greatest strength is its cast playing against type. Seeing Dwayne Johnson play a terrified teenager and Jack Black embody a teenage girl provides most of the film's comedy. It also cleverly uses video game tropes, such as non-player characters (NPCs) with limited dialogue and visual "level-up" sequences.
