In 1511, Selim's father, Bayezid II, was overthrown by his own sons, and a power struggle ensued. Selim, who was then a governor in Trabzon, emerged as a strong contender for the throne. He returned to Constantinople (modern-day Istanbul) and began to gather support among the janissaries and other factions.
