The Balkan Fun festival erupted into a new kind of celebration. The villagers, led by Kristina and Luka, followed the map, laughing and singing as they went. They crossed the river on an old wooden bridge, its planks creaking rhythmically under their steps, and trekked up a narrow path flanked by wild lavender and thyme. The scent of herbs mixed with the distant sound of a shepherd’s gajde (bagpipe) drifting from a far-off pasture.

The festival was a centuries‑old tradition that marked the end of summer. Stalls lined the cobblestones, each offering something unique: smoked cheese, plum rakija, hand‑woven carpets, and a stand where a jovial man named Milen played the tamburica, his fingers dancing over the strings with a skill that could coax tears from the most stoic listener. The rhythmic beat of the drum— davul —pounded like a heartbeat, drawing everyone into a collective pulse.
