Al's life changes when his girlfriend, Violet (Susan Sarandon), becomes pregnant. Susan Sarandon’s Hattie is arguably the film’s most modern character. She is neither a victim nor a villain; she is a pragmatist. When she leaves Violet behind, it is not cruelty but the grim logic of a woman with no social safety net. The film’s final scene, where Violet plays with dolls after marrying Bellocq, is devastating. Louis Malle’s 1978 American debut, Pretty Baby , remains one of the most polarizing entries in cinema history. Set in 1917 New Orleans, it tells the haunting story of Violet, a young girl raised in a brothel who is eventually "auctioned off" to adulthood.
